How to Grieve Workshop Content:
Grief and loss is something every one of us will face at some point in our lives, yet most people find themselves unprepared and bewildered when they are confronted by it. Whether we have suffered a loss ourselves or need to support someone else who is grieving, we don't know what to do with the intensity of the feelings and the ways in which loss can change a person.
The truth is that the grief over deep losses never really ends, but grief has an acute and a long-term phase. The goal of "healthy grief" is to get to a point where remembering the lost loved one brings up more feelings of love and gratitude than pain. You start to remember the person, rather than the loss. To get to this point, the bereaved needs to come to terms with the reality of the loss, allow themselves to experience the emotions related to the loss, resolve any conflicting feelings, celebrate the memory of the lost loved one, and be able to focus on and see possibilities for the future again.
This workshop explores the following:
- What is "healthy grief"?
- What is the goal of grief and grief support?
- What are the acute and long-term phases of grief?
- 5 "tasks" or challenges that have to be dealt with to reach a point where we can truly remember and celebrate the loved one, rather than the loss itself
- How to support others through grief, in a way that helps them deal with these challenges
- Complicated Grief
- Grief and Trauma
- Loss of someone we had a complicated or negative relationship with
- Losses unrelated to death (loss of abilities, health, job, relationship, etc)
- Long term grief and the need to revisit and re-process significant losses in later life phases
- Supporting children through grief
